Few mythologies have burned themselves into the modern imagination quite like the myths of the Norse. Thunder gods, doomed wolves, world-spanning trees, and a prophesied apocalypse that even the gods cannot escape — this is storytelling with the volume turned up.

But the surface barely scratches how strange and rich these tales really are.

Consider the sources. Most of what survives comes from two texts written in 13th-century Iceland, the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, the latter penned by a chieftain and poet named Snorri Sturluson. Snorri was writing centuries after Iceland converted to Christianity, which means much of what the modern world knows about the "pagan" Norse gods was recorded by someone who no longer worshipped them. History is full of odd custodians.

Then there is the matter of the days of the week. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday all carry the fingerprints of Norse deities, quietly smuggled into everyday English. The gods never really left.

And here is a detail that surprises many: the Norse afterlife was not one place but several. Warriors, the drowned, the diseased, and the ordinary dead all had different destinations. There was no single heaven or hell waiting at the end — the geography of death was crowded and complicated, and where a soul ended up depended on how a life ended.

Even the cosmos itself was unusual. Rather than a simple sky above and earth below, the Norse imagined nine interconnected worlds, home to gods, giants, elves, dwarves, and the dead, all bound together by a single enormous tree. Squirrels carried insults between its branches. Dragons chewed at its roots. It was a living, quarreling universe.
