Loyal, intense, and slightly convinced that everyone around you is doing things wrong: congratulations, you got the German Shepherd. This is not a dog for the faint of heart, and neither, apparently, are you.

German Shepherds are working dogs through and through. They need a job, a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning. Sound familiar? These are not the kind of dogs that laze around on the couch waiting for belly rubs (though they will absolutely demand those too). They are focused, they are driven, and they will absolutely judge you if you slack off. You probably do the same thing at work meetings and family gatherings, so the energy should mesh nicely.

And then they follow that person to every room in the house, including the bathroom, because privacy is a concept for people with lesser dogs. They are also, it must be said, a lot. High energy, high intelligence, high opinions about whether you are exercising them enough. A bored German Shepherd will redecorate your home in ways you did not request. Keep them stimulated, keep them active, and they will be the most impressive, capable, borderline-intimidating dog on the block. Neglect that, and you will come home to a very creative interpretation of your furniture.

Training is non-negotiable with this breed, but honestly, they love it. Structure, consistency, clear expectations: this dog thrives on knowing the rules. Whether you already live like that or are about to be humbled into it, your German Shepherd will make sure you get there either way.
